Cockroaches

Problem:

Cockroaches, also known as water bugs and palmetto bugs, are among the most difficult household pests to control. Except for periods of warm weather when they migrate from house to house, domestic cockroaches spend their entire life inside buildings. Usually they are found in basements, bathrooms and kitchens where they feed upon a wide variety of foods, including wallpaper paste. Cockroaches can spread bacterial organisms that cause gastroenteritis and other intestinal infections. Some people are allergic to cockroach secretions. Most cockroaches also secrete an oily liquid that stains fabrics, woodwork and other surfaces.

In the past, homeowners tried to eliminate cockroaches by spreading insecticides around visible areas without getting into the areas that they hide and multiply.
